Premium whisky buyers in Asia are spending more carefully, and IWSR's latest analysis says brands and cask sellers now have to prove scarcity, age and provenance rather than lean on heritage.

TL;DR

  • Value fell again: IWSR says global status spirits lost 10% of their value in 2025, the second straight year of decline, with Scotch down 9% and China down 25%.
  • Buyers are choosing on evidence: IWSR's four themes are genuine scarcity, age as a trust signal, access and community, and provenance over pedigree.
  • For APAC cask buyers, the practical test is verification, not brand name. This is information, not investment advice.

What did IWSR report about status spirits in 2025?

IWSR is the drinks market research firm whose data the industry uses to track beverage alcohol sales. In an insight published on 1 October 2026 and authored by Helen Jagger, IWSR said global status spirits value fell 10% in 2025. Within that, Cognac fell 17%, Scotch fell 9% and agave spirits rose 2%. By market, China fell 25%, the United States fell 6% and duty free fell 3%.

How does this compare with earlier data?

Last year's IWSR study put the 2024 decline at 8%, with China down 28% and Scotch also down 8% while remaining the leading status category with a 38% share, as reported by Drinks Intel. Separately, The Spirits Business reported in April 2026 that super-premium-and-above spirits lost 15% in value in 2025 across IWSR's 21 tracked markets. That measure uses a different price band, so it should not be set side by side with the 10% figure.

What do status spirits buyers want now?

IWSR's analyst Guy Wolfe said "Spending smart has become a virtue, rather than a compromise." IWSR's four ways to attract these buyers are genuine scarcity rather than manufactured limited editions, age statements as a concrete trust signal, access and community such as distillery visits and cask networks, and provenance over pedigree, meaning local storytelling and independent verification.

IWSR also noted that India has emerged as a producer breaking into the status whisky tier, alongside Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and Denmark. It cited one Sotheby's whisky auction that raised US$3.1 million across 39 lots as evidence that rare stock still sells.

Why it matters for Asian whisky and cask investors

The four themes read like a due diligence checklist. A cask offer that cannot show who holds the warehouse receipt, the fill date, the cask type and an independent gauge of volume fails the provenance test however famous the distillery. Asian buyers weighing Scotch against alternatives can compare this with our analysis of IWSR's earlier 10% decline at https://whiskybulletin.com/status-whisky-slumps-for-a-second-year-what-iwsrs-10-drop-means-for-apac-buyers/, our look at the US tariff change at https://whiskybulletin.com/us-drops-scotch-whisky-tariff-to-zero-what-it-means-for-asian-cask-investors/, and our comparison of casks with gold at https://whiskybulletin.com/whisky-cask-vs-gold-investment-comparing-tangible-assets-in-2026/.

What is not confirmed

We could not independently confirm the Sotheby's US$3.1 million figure or identify the sale. IWSR's 10% figure comes from IWSR itself, and we found no second outlet repeating it yet. No forecast for 2026 is implied here.
