A 52-year-old Karuizawa from cask 5627, hand-bottled in 2012 by the distillery's last master distiller, reached a US$500,000 hammer price at Sotheby's New York on 18 September 2026, according to Whisky Advocate.
TL;DR
- Karuizawa 52 Year Old Cask #5627 'The Prototype' hammered at US$500,000 against an estimate of US$400,000 to US$600,000. Whisky Advocate reports the price; Sotheby's lot page hides results behind a login.
- Only two prototype bottles were hand-drawn from this cask before 41 bottles were released commercially. This is the second and last, filled on 20 December 2012, and Sotheby's lists its provenance as Bonhams Hong Kong, November 2019.
- Whisky Advocate says the six highest hammer prices of 2026 so far have all been Japanese whiskies.
What sold, and for how much?
Sotheby's offered Lot 2130 in its Whisky and Whiskey sale: a single 70cl bottle of Karuizawa 52 Year Old, distilled on 1 February 1960 from Cask #5627, bottled at 58.3% ABV. Karuizawa is a Japanese distillery that stopped distilling at the end of 2000 and was later demolished, according to whisky writer Fred Minnick. The label is signed by Osami Uchibori, Karuizawa's final master distiller, and the lot includes his signed guarantee certificate and carton. Whisky Advocate's Jonny McCormick reported the US$500,000 hammer price in an update to his 16 September preview. The buyer has not been named.
Why is this bottle so scarce?
Sotheby's states that only two 'prototype' bottles were ever hand-bottled from Cask #5627, the first on 2 March 2012 and this one on 20 December 2012, before the final 41 bottles were produced for commercial release. The standard 1960 release was bottled at 51.8% ABV, per Minnick, so this bottle is stronger. Whisky Advocate also reports that a related Cask 5627 bottle, called 'Treasure Ship', sold for US$638,007 at Bonhams Hong Kong in May.
How does it compare with other September sales?
In Whisky Advocate's list of the 20 highest single-bottle hammer prices for September, published 2 October, this Karuizawa came first. The next highest were a 1950 Very Very Old Fitzgerald bourbon at US$84,900 and a Macallan in Lalique 55 Year Old at US$55,200, so the Karuizawa sold for almost six times the runner-up. What should Asian buyers check before bidding on rare Japanese whisky?
Three points stand out from the sources. First, fees: Sotheby's lot page states a 24% buyer's premium and a 1% overhead premium on the hammer price, plus any applicable tax. On our arithmetic, a US$500,000 hammer implies roughly US$625,000 before tax. Second, delivery: Sotheby's says spirits can be collected in New York or shipped to only three US jurisdictions directly, and it refers other destinations to its wine team for shipping options. Third, labelling and provenance: Whisky Advocate links the sale to wider concerns about transparency in Japanese whisky, and notes that the JSLMA guidelines and stamp apply only to member companies. It also says Sotheby's had not disclosed provenance, although the lot page now lists Bonhams Hong Kong in November 2019. Frequently Asked Questions
How much did the Karuizawa 1960 sell for at Sotheby's?
Whisky Advocate reports a US$500,000 hammer price on 18 September 2026, within Sotheby's US$400,000 to US$600,000 estimate. Buyer's premium is extra.
Is the Karuizawa 1960 Cask 5627 one of the 41 commercial bottles?
No. Sotheby's describes it as one of only two prototype bottles hand-filled before the 41 commercial bottles were produced.
Does a high Karuizawa price mean Japanese whisky prices will keep rising?
Not necessarily. One auction result is a single data point. Whisky Advocate notes that Japanese whiskies hold the six highest hammer prices of 2026 so far, but that does not forecast future prices. This is not investment advice.
