KAZE Founder’s Reserve LEGACY: A Tribute in Every Drop
Tenkyo Distillery in Aizu, Japan, has introduced its first official release—KAZE Founder’s Reserve LEGACY—as a heartfelt tribute to its late founder, Shunsuke Koike. The name “KAZE,” meaning “wind” in Japanese, was chosen to symbolize the meeting of Scottish spirit and Japanese maturation, an idea that Koike himself envisioned before his untimely passing at just 28 years old in 2022.
This release is not just a product launch; it is a statement of legacy. Koike was deeply passionate about whisky craftsmanship and pushed for a globally-minded approach, blending tradition with innovation. Although the distillery had not yet completed its construction at the time, he was already maturing imported Scotch new-make whiskies on Japanese soil in preparation for this vision.
A Fusion of Cultures and Techniques
KAZE Founder’s Reserve LEGACY is a blend of malt and grain Scotch whiskies, matured exclusively in Japan using a solera system specially designed by Koike. The solera consists of 189 casks, crafted from 58 different wood types, reflecting a meticulous and experimental approach to aging.
The system ensures that each batch is continuously evolving. Older whisky remains in the cask as new liquid is added, allowing complexity to build over time while preserving the integrity of Koike’s original concept. This method, while uncommon in Japanese whisky production, gives KAZE a unique identity that straddles multiple whisky traditions.
Presentation and Packaging
The visual presentation of the whisky is minimalistic yet refined. The design reflects the core concept of “wind”—an unseen but powerful force. The bottle’s natural tones, understated labels, and sleek silhouette create a sense of purity and quiet elegance. Every detail reinforces the theme of legacy and movement, connecting the past to the present.
The release is available in two sizes: a 700ml bottle priced at ¥8,250 (approximately €50) and a 200ml sampler edition for introductory tasting. Sales are exclusive to Japan for now, through Tenkyo’s YUKKURA online and physical store.
Tasting Notes
KAZE Founder’s Reserve LEGACY presents a deep amber hue in the glass. The nose opens with aromas of dried fruits—raisins, figs—and a touch of white chocolate and brown sugar. There is a gentle spice profile with a soft layer of smoke that hints at its Scottish origin.
On the palate, the whisky is rich and layered, offering flavors of toffee, roasted nuts, almonds, and juicy apricots. A delicate smokiness weaves through the mid-palate, enhancing the overall balance. The finish is medium-long, delivering a faint bitterness reminiscent of a fine cigar, balanced by a lingering sweetness and warmth.
Honoring a Visionary
More than just a whisky, this release embodies the vision and ambition of Shunsuke Koike. He worked with industry veterans and researchers to construct Tenkyo Distillery with long-term plans in mind. The blending of Japanese environment and Scottish new-make whisky was only the beginning of what he hoped would become a globally respected distilling practice.
After Koike’s passing, his family and close collaborators made the difficult decision to continue the project in his honor. This debut release is both a culmination and a beginning—celebrating his ideals while setting the tone for what’s to come.
Why KAZE Matters
KAZE Founder’s Reserve LEGACY is significant for several reasons. First, it introduces a rare example of cross-border collaboration in the whisky world—Scotch spirit aged in Japan with Japanese innovation. Second, it incorporates a complex solera system that’s rarely seen in Japanese whisky. Third, and most importantly, it tells a story of resilience, remembrance, and forward-thinking creativity.
Collectors and connoisseurs will find in KAZE not just a whisky, but a meaningful connection to a young visionary whose passion lives on through the spirit he helped shape. This is one release that transcends the glass.
