Diageo has unveiled its much-anticipated 2024 Special Releases Collection, and whisky enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to. Known for its iconic distilleries like Lagavulin, Talisker, Oban, and Mortlach, Diageo’s annual Special Releases showcase exclusive, limited-edition single malts. This year’s collection, Spirited Xchange 2.0, presents unique expressions that push the boundaries of traditional whisky-making, with innovative maturation techniques and collector-worthy bottles.

According to Stuart Morrison, Diageo’s master blender, the collection is driven by curiosity and experimentation. “This collection is about what happens when you challenge yourself to think ‘what if,’” Morrison says. From using wine casks to employing rare woods, these whiskies represent new flavors while still holding onto the signature profiles that whisky lovers know and appreciate.

The 2024 Special Releases Collection: A Closer Look

This year’s collection includes eight distinct whiskies, each offering a unique taste experience. One standout is Lagavulin Fireside Tales ($180), a 12-year-old whisky aged in ex-bourbon barrels, refill American oak hogsheads, and European oak butts. Fans of Lagavulin will recognize its signature smokiness, but with a new twist—bright fruit notes bring a fresh dimension to the palate.

Mortlach Midnight Dusk ($300) is another fascinating expression. It’s the only non-age-statement whisky in the collection, finished in Ramandolo white wine and Sangiovese red wine casks. This innovative maturation enhances Mortlach’s typically robust profile with a lighter, fruitier character.

For those who prefer coastal influences, Oban Coastal Orchard ($120) fits the bill. This 10-year-old whisky is partially finished in new charred Oloroso-seasoned oak, imparting flavors of orchard fruit with a hint of sea air. Talisker Tidal Churn ($105) offers a bold, maritime character with its 8-year-old whisky finished in stone-spun and toasted American oak casks.

Rare Finds and New Names

Other highlights include the Singleton of Glen Ord Autumn Walk ($155), aged in experimental Pyrenean oak cask-ends for a sweet, spicy finish, and Benrinnes Grand Crescendo ($480), a 21-year-old double-matured in wine-seasoned casks. Caol Ila Ambrosial Feast ($110) offers a complex mix of oak finishes, while Roseisle Origami Kite 2 ($95) is only the second release from this newer distillery, adding a fresh voice to the collection.

Whisky collectors and aficionados can purchase these exclusive releases from specialty retailers or directly through Malts.com. For those looking for past collections, the Whisky Exchange is an excellent resource.
