You don’t have to be a whisky expert to appreciate Whisky Journey. Whisky Journey 2022, in its third iteration, will take place at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre on December 2-3. It will include over 20 exhibitors, each of which will bring over 100 whisky variations.
This two-day event is not to be missed by anybody with even a passing interest in the “water of life”; it features some of the rarest whiskies in the world and brings together those who share a passion for them. Since there will be so many whiskies at Whisky Journey 2022, getting started might be challenging. To help, we’ve compiled a list of the top five you shouldn’t miss.
Tomatin 125th Anniversary Cask 6810, Bottled in 1993
The whisky was selected by Master Distiller Graham Eunson and put into an Oloroso Sherry Cask back in 1993 in honor of the distillery’s 125th anniversary. Using such a barrel is evocative of how the distillery started in 1897. While the fragrance is initially subdued, robust flavors of Oloroso Sherry Cask emerge on the palate, followed by the more subtle scents of coffee liqueur, flamed orange, caramel, and black walnut bitters. Additional layers of complexity are added to the whisky’s character by pipe tobacco and eucalyptus herbs, followed by European Oak spice, toffee, and dark chocolate. The final taste is quite luxurious.
Rare Currach Umeshu Cask
The Currach Single Malt Irish Whisky is one of the most unique on our list since it is finished in a seaweed burnt cask. This unusual whisky was conceptualized during Whisky Journey 2021 by Patrick Shelly, the proprietor of Currach Irish Whisky. With great pride, the distillery introduces its newest product to the public this year: the world’s first Irish Whisky finished in Umeshu casks.
The pure Irish malted barley used in this Whisky’s triple distillation was aged in a first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrel before being moved to a virgin American wood cask burned with Atlantic Kombu seaweed. Extra finishing in a barrel seasoned with rare Umeshu from Japan’s Hygo area is utilized for a limited edition bottling of Whisky Journey 2022. This is a must-have for the party!
Springbank Adults aged 21 and 25
To this day, Springbank is the only distillery worldwide to malt, distill, age, and bottle its whisky on the same property. Due in significant part to the utilization of equipment dating back to the distillery’s founding, Springbank adheres closely to time-honored practices in creating its whisky. Springbank’s traditional style has gained significant attention, and its bottles of whisky have seen prices jump to over five times its original.
Two of the distillery’s best products, aged 21 and 25 years, will be released in Whiskey Journey 2022. During the event, you may bid on these unique expressions, sure to become collector’s items due to their scarcity and high price.
Ao Whiskey!
The House of Suntory is one of the Asian distilleries showcasing their wares during the festival. Yamazaki, a line produced by a Japanese distillery, has helped bring whiskies from the Land of the Rising Sun up to par with their Scottish counterparts. The liquor’s reputation also changed due to the varied taste characteristics. The nearly century-long tradition lives on via a new generation, as seen by the creation of Ao whisky. This unique expression from Suntory honors the oceans that link whisky’s five major traditions and stays true to the company’s guiding whisky-making philosophy. Ao is an amalgam of many European and North American languages, including Irish, Scottish, Canadian, American, and Japanese.
Despite its complexity, Ao is layered so that each tradition may be tasted individually without losing the others. Join us at Whisky Journey 2022 to be among the first to try this unique concoction.
Bruichladdich, Black Art, Edition 10.1, Aged 29 Years
Many distilleries now use clear glass bottles to showcase their products, but Bruichladdich has chosen a different route. The whisky within is concealed from anyone who might want to take a peek by being stored in a dark bottle. Many whisky drinkers worldwide are left in the dark about the distillery’s renowned Black Art series since the bottles include no more information beyond the year of production. Many whisky fans have been interested in the spirit because of its “mysterious charm.” The tenth installment, Black Art Edition 10, of Whisky Journey will be released in 2022. We don’t even know what kind of grain or barrel was utilized to make this whisky. Visit the Bruichladdich stand to learn more about this unidentified whisky.
